Our Story

Not your average homestead

When we first decided we wanted to pack it all up and move out to the country, acquire some land, and try our hand at homesteading, we had no idea what we were doing. Neither one of us had ever lived on a farm, we didn’t really know anyone who homesteaded. I had read a lot of books and we both knew that we weren’t happy living packed into a neighborhood with so many other houses, but we had no idea what we were signing up for.

The same day we walked through our house with the realtor, we also picked out the four alpacas that would be the beginning of our herd. Neither of us had any practice in the fiber arts, we didn’t crochet, weave or even knit. But I knew I wanted alpacas, and I would find a way to make it useful. After the alpacas we discovered angora goats, and we quickly developed a small herd of them as well. Our homestead has grown to include ducks, chickens, a few turkeys and bees. Bees were something we both were excited to delve into, and they fascinate us endlessly.

I finally decided that I would learn how to spin, and quickly fell in love with it after purchasing a drop spindle at a local fiber festival. Kyle drove to Pittsburgh to pick up my first wheel as a Christmas gift. After that I fell down the fiber arts rabbit hole, weaving, wet felting, and finally making my way to knitting. Our products take time as much of the fiber is processed right here in our home. The animals are sheared, fiber is hand washed, hand carded and hand spun which takes hours of work. Some fiber is sent off to the mill to be turned into roving and yarn, just to assist me, because I simply can’t get through it all before the next shearing day. All of the woven pieces are unique as I just weave freely and usually without a pattern.

Around the same time we decided to live a slower, simpler life in the country I also started to turn my attention to natural, alternative remedies for our everyday ailments. I started on my journey of natural healing and became a certified level 2 Professional Aromatherapist. My journey is far from over as I continue to study herbal remedies and continue my training in aromatherapy, I am also now a trauma informed aromatherapist and focus much of my work on those dealing with grief and trauma. This journey has also led me down the path of becoming a home funeral guide and holding space consultant. It brings me joy to offer hand crafted blends, and to consult with clients for customized consultations.

We have big plans for our little homestead, and we hope you will join us as we work hard to live a slower life.
